Al-Qaidah an-Nuraniyyah: learning to read Arabic step by step

by ASWAQ BV 14 Apr 2024 0 comments

If you want to learn to read the Quran in Arabic, you first need to become familiar with the letters, the sounds and the way letters are joined together. Al-Qaidah an-Nuraniyyah is a well-known method that builds this up step by step.

The method is used by children and adults alike and is mainly intended as a systematic preparation for reading Arabic and Quranic text.

What do you learn with al-Qaidah an-Nuraniyyah?

You don't start straight away with long verses. The emphasis is first on recognition and pronunciation. Depending on the edition and guidance, topics include:

  • the Arabic letters;
  • letters in their different forms;
  • short vowels and reading marks;
  • joined letters and letter combinations;
  • blending sounds correctly;
  • increasingly longer words and reading passages.

That structure is important: a student doesn't have to remember everything at once, but practises one next step at a time.

For children and adults

Although the method is often used with children, it is also suitable for adults who can't yet read Arabic, or only a little. The pace can easily be adjusted.

For children, short and regular practice usually works better than one long session. Think, for example, of ten to fifteen minutes at a time, first revising familiar material and then adding one new part.

Guidance makes a difference

A book can offer letters and exercises, but pronunciation is hard to learn from paper alone. Guidance from someone who has mastered the sounds helps to recognise and correct mistakes early.

For parents or teachers, the teacher's guide to al-Qaidah an-Nuraniyyah (Dutch edition) can offer support.

Which edition can you choose?

We stock several editions of the method, such as the A5 edition with a QR code that links to online lessons, and the al-Husayn Institute edition (Dutch edition). There are also step-by-step parts with Dutch explanations, such as Qaidah Nuraniah part 1 and part 2.

Prefer English instructions?

Comparable methods with English explanations are The Read Qaidah, Read and Rise Qaidah and Al-Qaidah Al-Quraniyah: An Introduction to Tajweed. For young children, Let's Learn Alif Baa Taa is a playful first step.

A simple practice routine

  1. Briefly revise what is already known.
  2. Practise one new letter, sound or combination.
  3. Let the student read aloud.
  4. Correct calmly and let them try again.
  5. End with a short moment of success.
