Arabic perfume: what makes these fragrances so special?
Arabic perfumes have become increasingly popular in recent years. That is not because there is one fixed 'Arabic scent', but precisely because the range is so broad: from warm and spicy to fresh, sweet, woody or floral.
When you discover Arabic perfume for the first time, you often come across terms such as oud, musk, amber and perfume oil. Below we explain what you can expect from them.
What is meant by Arabic perfume?
The term is usually used for perfumes and fragrance oils from Middle Eastern brands, or for scents that closely follow the perfume traditions of that region. Many compositions work with rich, layered scent profiles and combine, for example, woods, resins, spices, flowers and sweeter notes.
That doesn't mean every Arabic perfume is heavy or powerful. There are also fresh, soft and accessible fragrances.
Well-known scent profiles
Oud
Oud is often used in deep, woody compositions. Depending on the combination, a fragrance can come across as smoky, warm, dry or rather sweet.
Musk
In modern perfumery, musk is used as a note or accord and can smell clean, soft, powdery or warm. That makes it popular both on its own and in combinations.
Amber and spices
Amber compositions often feel warm and rounded. Combined with vanilla, cinnamon, saffron or other spices, they create a distinctive profile that mainly appeals to lovers of full-bodied perfumes.
Floral and fresh
Rose, jasmine, citrus and other fresh or floral notes are also common. So if you don't like heavy scents, you certainly don't have to skip Arabic perfume.
Perfume spray or perfume oil?
A perfume spray is familiar to use and spreads the scent quickly. Perfume oil is usually applied in small amounts directly to the skin and gives a different scent experience. Which form suits you better is mainly personal.
Longevity and projection also differ by product, skin type, amount and composition. A high intensity is therefore never automatically guaranteed.
How do you choose a scent without smelling it first?
- First look at scent families you already like: fresh, sweet, woody, spicy or floral.
- Read the product description and look at the main notes.
- When in doubt, start with a familiar scent profile rather than choosing on packaging alone.
- Give a perfume some time after applying it; the scent often changes as you wear it.
