Islamic publishers: how to choose books and translations

by A El-Masoudi 17 Jan 2023 0 comments

Islamic books in Dutch are published by a range of publishers, each with its own catalogue, audience and editorial choices. Names readers may come across include Noer, Goodword, Badr and other specialist Islamic publishers.

When choosing a good book, however, the publisher's name is only one part of the picture. Topic, author, translation, sources and reading level matter at least as much.

Why do publishers offer such different books?

One publisher focuses mainly on children's books, another on classical Islamic works, creed, fiqh, parenting or personal development. The way Arabic terms are translated and rendered can also differ.

That is why it is more useful to look at what you want to learn than to automatically regard one publisher as 'the best'.

1. Look at the topic

Are you looking for an introduction to Islam, a work on aqidah, a translation of the Quran or a children's book? Start with the topic and then compare the available titles.

If you are just starting out, have a look at Islam for beginners. For a broader overview, browse our English Islamic books or the full range of Islamic books.

2. Check the author and the original source

With translated works, it helps to know who the original author is and from which language the book was translated. Classical works may exist in several translations or with different commentaries.

So read the product information and table of contents whenever they are available.

3. Pay attention to the translation

A literal translation is not automatically easier or better. Good readability, consistent terminology and clear explanations can matter just as much, especially for new readers.

With religious technical terms, a publisher may choose to keep the Arabic word and explain it. That can be useful when you later read more books on the same subject.

4. Choose by audience

A book for children, new Muslims, students or advanced readers calls for a different style and a different amount of prior knowledge. So look not only at the title, but also at the age, level and purpose of the book.

5. Use popularity as a starting point, not as proof

A bestseller can show what many other customers find interesting, but popularity does not automatically tell you which book best fits your question.

ASWAQ Publishing

Alongside books from many external publishers, ASWAQ also publishes its own titles. You can find the current range in the ASWAQ Publishing collection.

A simple checklist

  • Does the topic match what I want to learn?
  • Is it clear who the author and translator are?
  • Does the language level suit me?
  • Are sources or references included where the topic calls for them?
  • Do I want an introduction, a practical guide or deeper study?

By paying attention to these points, you choose more deliberately than when you rely only on a publisher's name or sales figures.
