Islamic quiz: testing and building knowledge through play

02 Oct 2023 0 comments

An Islamic quiz can be a fun way to review existing knowledge and discover new topics. The most important thing is that a quiz sparks curiosity — not that everyone knows as many answers as possible by heart.

With the right approach, a quiz works at home as well as in a classroom, a youth group or at a family gathering.

Why does a quiz work so well?

Questions make you think actively. A wrong answer is not the end, but rather a reason to briefly find out what the right answer is. That makes a quiz different from just reading information.

For which ages?

That depends mainly on the difficulty of the questions and the reading level. With younger children you can play in teams and explain difficult words. Older children and adults can work with time limits, categories or follow-up questions.

Three ways to play

1. Classic quiz

Divide the players into teams, take turns asking a question and keep score. This works well for larger groups.

2. Learning together

Let everyone think for themselves first and then discuss the answer together. That way knowledge comes before competition.

3. Choose a theme

Play only questions about, for example, the Quran, the prophets, prayer or general Islamic knowledge. That is handy if you want to practise one topic.

Quiz cards you can use straight away

Have a look, for example, at the Islamic knowledge quiz cards or the quiz cards from Goodword. If you are looking for a game in English, the Hajj Fun Game: Little Steps to Makkah is a playful alternative.

Don't turn it into an exam

Especially with children, it is better not to focus only on right or wrong. Ask now and then: Why do you think that? or Where could we look this up? That makes the quiz a starting point for conversation and deeper learning.

In the Islamic quiz cards collection you will find various quiz games. For a wider range of play material, see Toys & games.

In the end, the best quiz is the one where participants remember not only their score afterwards, but also something new they discovered.
