A good self-help book doesn't just give advice; it also helps you reflect on your choices, habits and beliefs. Islamic self-help books often connect personal development with themes such as faith, sabr, tawakkul, relationships and the state of the heart.

The range is broad. So rather than asking which book is 'the best', it helps to ask which book matches the question you are dealing with right now.

What do you want to work on?

Letting go and redirecting your heart

If you notice that you place a lot of value on recognition, relationships or circumstances you can't fully control, a book about attachment and inner peace may suit you. Reclaim Your Heart by Yasmin Mogahed deals with personal and spiritual themes around the heart and the way we attach ourselves to life. A Dutch translation, Win je hart terug, is also available.

Love, relationships and happiness

For questions about love, expectations and emotional balance, Yasmin Mogahed's Love & Happiness is a good fit; we currently stock it in its Dutch edition, Liefde & geluk. Don't read books like this as ready-made recipes, but as material to reflect on your own situation.

Emptiness, pain and recovery

When you are going through a difficult period, you sometimes look for words for feelings that are hard to name. Healing the Emptiness addresses themes like these from a spiritual angle; we stock it in its Dutch edition, De leegte helen.

Hope, happiness and self-worth

In English, Don't Be Sad by Dr. 'Aid al-Qarni is a classic on hope and contentment. Secrets to Self Esteem by Afshan Khan focuses on self-worth, and Tawbah: Turning to Allah is about repentance and new beginnings. For short, motivating reflections, see Motivation by Mufti Menk.

How do you get more out of a self-help book?

  • Read slowly. One chapter you actually act on is more valuable than a whole book you skim through.
  • Take notes. Write down insights, questions and passages you want to come back to later.
  • Choose one concrete action. Turn an insight into something small you can practise this week.
  • Be critical. Not every piece of advice suits every person or situation.

A book does not replace appropriate help

Self-help books can offer support, reflection and inspiration, but they are no substitute for medical, psychological or other professional help when it is needed. For serious or persistent problems, expert guidance is important.

Above all, choose a book that invites you to reflect and to do something with those insights in a realistic way.
