Zamzam water: meaning, origin and how to check where it comes from
Zamzam water holds a special place in the Islamic tradition. The Zamzam well is located in Masjid al-Haram in Makkah, close to the Ka'bah, and is closely connected to the story of Hajar and her son Isma'il.
Because bottles labelled 'Zamzam' are also sold outside Saudi Arabia, a question that comes up regularly is: how do you know where the water comes from?
The origin of Zamzam
According to Islamic tradition, the well came into being in the desert with Hajar and her young son Isma'il. While searching for water, Hajar ran between the hills of Safa and Marwa. This event is also connected to the sa'i performed during Hajj and Umrah.
Throughout the centuries, the well has remained an important part of the pilgrimage to Makkah.
The meaning for Muslims
Muslims drink Zamzam water with respect, and it is connected to well-known Islamic narrations. Many pilgrims drink it during their stay in Makkah and, where the applicable rules allow it, take water home for their own use.
Religious statements about the virtues of Zamzam are best studied through reliable hadith sources and the explanations of scholars.
How do you assess the origin?
Taste, colour or price alone are not a reliable way to establish the authenticity of water. A luxurious label doesn't prove anything on its own either.
Instead, look at things that actually say something about the origin:
- a clearly identifiable and traceable seller;
- information about packaging and origin;
- whether the seller can answer questions about sourcing and origin;
- whether import and sale comply with the applicable rules.
If the origin is unclear, caution is wiser than relying on claims such as 'original' or '100% genuine'.
Zamzam during Hajj and Umrah
