Ranks of the Elite Volume 3 by Imam Ibn al-Jawzi continues the series with biographies of more than 280 figures from Kufa, Basra and the surrounding regions. Like the earlier volumes, it comes from Ibn al-Jawzi's Sifat al-Safwah, his abridgement of Abu Nu'aym al-Asbahani's Hilyat al-Awliya.

Ibn al-Jawzi left out the chains of narration and reports he regarded as weak, so the accounts are concise and easy to read. The result is a collection of short portraits of scholars, worshippers, ascetics and people known for courage and sacrifice, with the emphasis on their devotion and character.
