Prayer times and useful apps: how to choose a reliable source

by ASWAQ BV 23 Feb 2025 0 comments

A prayer times app is handy, but different apps can still show different times for the same place. That doesn't immediately mean one app is wrong. They often use a different calculation method, location setting or local convention.

With a few simple checks you can avoid confusion and choose a source that fits your situation.

Why do prayer times differ between apps?

Differences arise especially for Fajr and Isha, because apps use different angles and calculation methods. The chosen location, time zone and daylight saving setting also play a role.

In addition, a local mosque may use fixed jama'ah times that are later than the start of the prayer time. It is therefore important to distinguish between the start of the prayer time and the time the congregational prayer begins.

Useful apps and websites

Widely used services include Mawaqit, Muslim Pro and IslamicFinder. Which one works best depends on your preference for features, language and settings.

Do you use an app mainly to pray on time? Then first check that your location is set correctly and compare the times once with a local mosque or a source you trust.

Check these settings

  • Location: is the right town or GPS location set?
  • Calculation method: does it match the method followed locally?
  • Time zone: check this especially after the switch to summer or winter time.
  • Madhhab setting for Asr: some apps offer different calculations for Asr.
  • Notifications: only set up the notifications that actually help you.

What is the best starting point?

For daily use, a consistent approach is often the most pleasant. If you regularly attend a particular mosque, it can make sense to follow its published prayer times. An app is then useful as a reminder and for moments when you are on the go.

Practical during Ramadan

During Ramadan, prayer times are consulted even more often because of Fajr and Maghrib. So check in advance which source you will use for suhoor, the start of the fast and iftar, so you don't have to switch between different apps every day.
