Ihram clothing and practical essentials for Hajj or Umrah
What should you take for Hajj or Umrah? A practical explanation of ihram clothing, comfort, storage and preparation.
A Hajj or Umrah journey requires more preparation than just packing a suitcase. Especially when it comes to ihram, it is wise to know in advance which clothing you need and which practical accessories can be useful along the way.
In this article we focus on clothing and essentials. For specific religious rules and exceptions, reliable fiqh guidance from a knowledgeable source is important.
What is meant by ihram?
Ihram refers both to the sacred state a pilgrim enters and, in everyday use, to the clothing men wear in that state.
For men, the familiar ihram clothing consists of two unstitched sheets: one around the lower body and one over the upper body. For women there is no separate prescribed two-piece ihram outfit; they wear suitable, modest clothing according to the rulings they follow.
What should you look for in an ihram set?
- Size: enough length and width make wrapping easier.
- Material: cotton or bamboo cotton can be pleasant in warm weather, depending on thickness and weave.
- Weight: a light set is easier to carry, while a heavier fabric may drape differently.
- Grip: a textured fabric can help the sheets stay in place more securely.
Have a look, for example, at the 100% cotton ihram by Al Safa, the luxury bamboo cotton ihram or the lightweight premium ihram.
Practical storage
During tawaf and at other moments you want to carry your passport, phone or small personal items safely without a large bag. An adjustable ihram storage belt or a compact neck pouch can be practical for this.
Always check the current rules on what you may bring to certain locations.
Travelling with children
Smaller sizes are also available for boys, such as the ihram set for children. Practise putting it on and walking in it at home beforehand. That prevents extra stress during the journey.
To prepare children in a playful way, the Hajj and Umrah Activity Book is a fun option.
