Umrah with children: practical preparation and packing list

by ASWAQ BV Beheerder 14 Oct 2023 1 comment

Umrah with children can be a special family journey, but it also requires more preparation than travelling with adults only. Distances, heat, crowds and a changed sleep rhythm can be hard on young children.

Realistic planning helps you keep room for both the rituals and rest.

Prepare children in advance

Explain in simple language where you are going and what they will see. Show photos of the Haram and talk about how very busy it can be at certain times.

Older children can learn some parts of Umrah in advance. For younger children, recognition and reassurance are often more important than a lot of information. The Hajj and Umrah Activity Book can help them get familiar with the journey in a playful way.

Don't fill every day

Adults can be inclined to want to do as much as possible. With children, that doesn't always work. Build in enough moments of rest and take sleep, meals and heat into account.

A quiet day can ultimately be more valuable than a full programme that leaves everyone exhausted.

Clothing and ihram

Bring light, comfortable clothing and make sure you have enough spare clothes. For boys who wear ihram, it can help to practise with the cloths at home beforehand. There is, for example, an ihram set for children.

For specific fiqh rulings on children, ihram and the rituals, it is best to consult reliable religious guidance.

Handy packing list for families

  • travel documents and digital copies;
  • enough comfortable clothing;
  • small snacks and refillable drinking options where permitted;
  • medication and a basic first-aid kit;
  • sun protection for moments outside the ihram restrictions and as appropriate to the situation;
  • a compact bag for essentials;
  • something small and familiar for young children during rest periods;
  • contact details of your accommodation and travel organisation.

Safety in crowds

Agree on a simple plan with older children in case someone gets separated. Make sure they carry a card or wristband with contact details. Keep young children close at all times in busy areas.

Check current travel requirements

Visa, health, vaccination and transport rules can change. So check them shortly before departure through official sources, your travel organisation and your airline. Old blog posts or other travellers' experiences are no substitute for this.

Preparing the content

A guide such as My Umrah Companion can help you go through the steps in advance. You can find more essentials in the Hajj & Umrah collection.

The most important tip for travelling with children is simple: plan less, take more time and expect the rhythm to be different from home.
