Different Quran editions: translation, tajweed, tafsir and Arabic text
Not every Quran edition has the same purpose. One edition contains only the Arabic text, another combines Arabic with a translation, and yet another is specially laid out to make the rules of tajweed visible.
Below you will find the main types, so you can choose with purpose.
Arabic mushaf
An Arabic mushaf contains the Quran in the original Arabic. Editions can differ in size, typeface, page layout and printing style. If you read Arabic and mainly want to use the original text, this type is often all you need.
See the Arabic Quran collection.
Quran with translation
A translation is intended to make the meaning more accessible to readers of that language. Because translating involves interpretive choices, the wording can differ between translations.
If you want both languages side by side, The Clear Quran with Arabic Text is an example of a bilingual English edition. For Dutch readers there is the Edele Koran in Dutch and Arabic.
Quran with transliteration
Transliteration converts Arabic sounds into Latin letters. That can help temporarily if you have not yet mastered the Arabic letters, but it is less precise than learning the Arabic script itself.
In English, the Noble Quran with Transliteration combines both. More combinations of translation and transliteration can be found in Quran with translation / transliteration.
Tajweed editions
Tajweed editions often use colours or other visual cues to make the reading rules recognisable. Such an edition is especially useful when you are already learning the rules of tajweed or receiving guidance on correct recitation.
See the current range at Tajweed Quran, including the Tajweed Quran with English translation.
Tafsir
A tafsir is not an ordinary translation, but an explanation of the Quran. Tafsir can deal with language, context, narrations and the explanations of scholars, among other things. For deeper study, this is a different category from a reading translation.
See the Tafsir collection. In English, The Clear Quran Made Easy: Story-Based Tafsir is an accessible place to start.
And what are qira'at?
Qira'at are canonically transmitted modes of reading the Quran, each with its own chains of transmission and rules. This subject goes further than a difference in 'style' or accent and is usually studied with specialised guidance.
