Koran met transliteratie of vertaling: wat is het verschil?

When you look for an edition of the Quran, you often come across terms such as translation, transliteration and Arabic text. Each has a different purpose. Once you know the difference, you can choose much more deliberately.

What is a translation of the Quran?

A translation renders the meaning of the Arabic text in another language, such as English. That is especially helpful when you want to understand what you are reading.

A translation always remains a human rendering of the meaning. Arabic words can carry several layers of meaning and translators have to make choices. That is why translations can differ from one another.

In English, The Clear Quran by Dr. Mustafa Khattab is known for its clear, modern language. More English titles can be found in our English Islamic books collection.

What is transliteration?

Transliteration writes Arabic words in Latin letters. The aim is not to translate the meaning, but to make the sound visible for someone who cannot yet read the Arabic script well.

That can help temporarily, for example to recognise words or to follow short passages. An English example is The Noble Quran with transliteration in Roman script. For Dutch readers we also have a Quran in Dutch / transliteration collection.

Can transliteration replace learning to read Arabic?

No. Arabic sounds cannot always be represented accurately in Latin letters. If you want to learn to read correctly, you will ultimately benefit more from the Arabic alphabet, dedicated learning materials and feedback on your pronunciation.

For that step, have a look at Learning Arabic. With English instructions, The Read Qaidah and Qaidah Quraniyah: an introduction to tajweed build up letters and sounds step by step. The well-known method al-Qaidah an-Nuraniyyah is also available (Dutch edition).

Which edition do you choose when?

  • You want to understand the meaning: choose a translation in a language you read well.
  • You want to compare Arabic and your own language: choose a bilingual edition.
  • You can't yet read the Arabic script well: transliteration can offer temporary support.
  • You want to learn to read Arabic independently: use a learning method and practise pronunciation with guidance.

Arabic and English side by side

A practical choice is The Clear Quran with Arabic text, in which you can use the original text and the English rendering side by side while reading. For Dutch readers there is De Edele Koran in Dutch and Arabic.

And what is tafsir?

Tafsir goes further than translation. Works of tafsir explain verses and deal with, for example, language, context and transmitted explanations. If you want to go deeper, you can therefore use a book from the Tafsir collection alongside a translation. In English, The Clear Quran Made Easy is an accessible, story-based option.

Want to see all kinds of editions? Go to Quran / Qur'an. Don't choose on cover or size alone, but above all on what you need while reading.
