Which Quran translation suits me best?

by ASWAQ BV 03 Dec 2025 0 comments

Choosing a Quran edition is easier when you first decide what you want to use it for. Do you mainly want to read the meaning in English? Do you want Arabic and English side by side? Or are you looking for a compact edition for on the go?

Use the guide below to quickly determine which type of edition suits you. This guide covers English editions; if you read Dutch, see our Dutch Quran editions. Prefer to compare all editions straight away? Browse our English Islamic books.

I mainly want to understand the meaning in English

Then choose an edition in which the English translation is pleasant to read and clearly laid out. The Clear Quran (English only) by Dr. Mustafa Khattab is an example of an edition you can look at for this.

When comparing, read a few pages if possible. Translators can use different English words to render the same Arabic passage.

I want the Arabic text and English side by side

Then a bilingual edition is often more convenient. The Clear Quran with Arabic Text combines both in one edition.

This is practical if you want to follow the Arabic while reading the English meaning alongside it. If you also want help with recitation, the Tajweed Quran with English translation marks the tajweed rules in colour.

I want to take a Quran with me on the go

A smaller size then matters more than extra notes or large print. Have a look, for example, at the compact Noble Quran Small (English/Arabic).

For daily use at home, a larger size can be more comfortable.

I want a beautiful edition as a gift

For a gift, finish and design matter as well as the content. The Clear Quran with Arabic Text in hardcover (available in several colours) and the Purple Quran deluxe edition are examples of refined editions with an English translation.

I want to learn to read Arabic

A translation mainly helps you with the meaning. To learn to read the Arabic text correctly, dedicated learning materials and guidance are more useful. Have a look, for example, at Learning Arabic or The Read Qaidah. Transliteration, as in The Noble Quran with transliteration, can offer temporary support, but it doesn't replace learning to recognise and pronounce the Arabic letters.

I want to study in more depth

For deeper study, one translation is usually not the end point. You can compare translations and also use reliable tafsir. See our Tafsir collection; in English, The Clear Quran Made Easy offers an accessible, story-based explanation.

Quick checklist

  • Daily reading: choose mainly on reading comfort and font size.
  • Following the Arabic: choose a bilingual edition.
  • On the go: choose a compact size.
  • Gift: look at both content and finish.
  • Study: combine a translation with tafsir and other reliable explanation.
