Best Quran translation: which edition suits you?

22 Mar 2023 0 comments

If you are looking for a Quran with a translation, you will soon notice that there are many different editions. The best choice depends mainly on how you want to use the Quran: for daily reading, study, on the go or alongside the Arabic text.

So there is no single edition that is best for everyone. Below we help you choose with purpose. This guide covers English editions; if you read Dutch, see our Dutch Quran editions.

1. Do you want Arabic and the translation side by side?

If you want to follow the Arabic text and read the meaning in English at the same time, a bilingual edition is practical. The Clear Quran with Arabic Text combines both languages in one book. For on the go there is also the compact Noble Quran Small (English/Arabic).

This type of Quran is especially suitable if you already read Arabic, want to learn to recognise the text or want to compare quickly with the translation while reading.

2. Are you mainly looking for a translation?

If you mainly want to read the meaning in English, an edition with a clear translation may be more pleasant. An example is The Clear Quran (English only).

When choosing, look not only at the translator but also at font size, layout, notes and the size of the book. A translation that reads well is one you will use more often in practice.

3. Do appearance and reading comfort matter to you?

Some editions combine a translation with a refined, modern design. Have a look, for example, at The Clear Quran with Arabic Text in hardcover (available in several colours) or the Purple Quran deluxe edition.

That also makes such an edition suitable as a gift, as long as the size and content suit the recipient.

What should you look for when choosing?

  • Reading goal: do you want to understand, compare, memorise or study?
  • Language: translation only, or Arabic and the translation together?
  • Size: a large edition for home or a compact version for on the go?
  • Layout: a sufficient font size and a calm page layout make a big difference.
  • Notes: some readers want only the translated meaning, others appreciate extra explanation.

A translation remains a rendering of the meaning

The Quran was revealed in Arabic. A translation helps you understand the meaning, but it remains a translation. Differences in wording between editions are therefore normal. For deeper study it can be useful to use several translations, tafsir and reliable explanation side by side.

That way you can choose based on what matters most to you: clarity, the Arabic text, size or reading comfort.
